Museum Gallery and Heritage Studies ( Installation Art process 1)

After a deep discussion about Kampong Hakka, we were to have a visit to see the environment of the surrounding and the condition of Kampong Hakka to experiencing  the atmosphere  there.

When we reach there, the first thing that i tough was desolation. The place was quiet and the villagers were little.Besides that, there were lot of abandon houses there.

After seeing the condition of Kampong Hakka, our group has come to a conclusion on the concept of our installation art which was abandon.

Museum Gallery and Heritage Studies (Installation Art)

This is our Installation art project for Kampong Hakka. For this project, we ask permission from the villager of Kampong Hakka to borrow some leftover equipment from an abandon house there. For the background, we show images of Kampong Hakka when we visited there using black and white image to show that the village is old.

Contemporary Design Issue (Critical Awareness)

What is critical awareness?

From what I know, critical awareness and critical thinking are connected.Critical aware is the early stage of solving problem or creating something new while critical thinking is the a process of solving the problem. To put it simple, critical awareness is a state of awareness of their surrounding and the state of their life to find the problem while critical thinking is a state where we found the problem and trying to solve the problem.

Critical thinking is the most efficient way of solving problem. However, without the awareness of of the problem, there wont be any solving problem. Critical awareness is very important in our daily life by helping us improve our life little by little.

Communication Practice (Complete Infographic)

This is my infographic for "Majorities Ethnic in Sarawak".

Communication Practice (Infographic Process)

My infographic is about "Majorities Ethnic in Sarawak". This is the process on how I make my infographic on Adobe Illustrator:

My infographic is in a form of a pie chart so first I make the circle using different sizes and for the country flag, I use the pen tool.

Then I devided them into 5 colloum for the 5 majorities ethnic. For the furthest row, I put 5 different simple house which refer to there traditional houses.

For the middle row, I put a sentence in their own laguage which is " What is your name" in English.

Lastly for the inner row, I design images of their traditional wear.

Contemporary Design Issue ( Argument: Stating Problem)

Ignorance of Signage

When I was in high school, I always saw students and teachers smoke in the school area. Like a normal school, there will always be a no smoking area sign and no smoking posters. But why are there still people smoking in school? What is the function of the sign or poster? These are not focusing on smoking only but every sign and posters. Therefore, I would disagree that people interact with sign and posters.
We cannot deny that there are lots of people are smoking and people go toilet every day. But we also cannot deny that we have seen these sign, right?

From what I see, it is clearly stated that it is a no smoking  area and stop sign. But why there are still smoking? Why there are still littering? Does people interact with it? Maybe adults would but  what about  teenagers? As we all know teenagers are in a rebelious  state. They cannot interpriate  something clearly. Such as myself, when I see  these sign,  I know it is a no smoking and no littering sign but I feel nothing. Why?
Its true that it depends on the individual of thinking and sign and poster are for persuading and convincing people. But what of use if it cant persuade?

Just now I told that I feel nothing when I saw the no smoking and no littering sign. If you were to ask me to give a reason. Then I would answer “it is still the same” because it is the most critical factor of it. If you were ask to look at a  small black dot for 5 hours, can you stand it? Ofcourse  not right. You will get bored. It is also the same with the sign. The sign is still the same, no improvement on the design.

Contemporary Design Issue (Argument Reference)

Article by Celestine Chua:
Are You Focusing on the Black Dot?
Consider the image below. What do you notice right away?
Black dot
If your answer is “the black dot,” perhaps a little bit of disdain because the dot tainted an otherwise perfectly good piece of paper, you would have answered the same as me and everyone else.
When presented with a blank paper with no specks but a dot, most of us would zoom right into the dot: even if it was at the corner of the paper. Why? Because it’s what’s “glaring” at us in the otherwise spotless surface.
Same for other images…
Black, pink, and white polka-dot butterflies
polka dot butterflies. What do you notice first?
Black dot: What grabs your attention first?

Communication Practice (Infographic: gathering information)

IBAN

The Ibans form the largest percentage of Sarawak’s population up to 30%. Reputed to be the most formidable headhunters on the island of Borneo, the Ibans of today are generous, hospitable and placid people. The Ibans dwell in longhouses, a stilted structure comprising many rooms housing a whole community of families. The Ibans are renowned for their Pua Kumbu (traditional Iban weavings), silver craftings, wooden crafting and beadwork.

The Malay make up 21% of the population of Sarawak. Traditionally fishermen, these seafaring people chose to form settlements on the bank of the many rivers in Sarawak. Today, many Malay have migrated to the cities where they are heavily involve in the public and private sectors and taken up various professions. The Malays are famed for their wood carving, silver and brass crafting as well as traditional Malays textile weaving with silver and gold thread (kain Songket)

KAMPONG HAKKA

The Hakka villagers claim that their village is more than 100 years old. They trace their history right back to 1860. Most of them came from Hui Zhou, China, and were brought here by the British to work in the tin mines. They settled in a village in Mantin known as kampung Attap because of its roofing. Today the same village is known as Kampong Hakka.

The village covers about 30 acres and its surrounding countryside was once a landscape of dredges and mining activity. This is now long in the past, and despite their having settled the land over a century ago, the villagers’ right of residence is not recognised by the land authorities. Their population has dwindled from about 200 families to only about 50 families as a result of outmigration and pressure to relocate.

Museum Gallery and Heritage Studies ( Introduction )

What is the concept of museum and gallery?

In my opinion, museum is a place where artifacts which relates with nation and civilization as proof of its existence which help the audience to not deny (evidence) them and to help remember of the past generations.

Meanwhile, gallery is a place for exhibition, promoting or a non-promoting purpose. In short, it is a place where you can sell or to show your work public.

Communication Practice ( What is Infographic? )

what i understand about Infographics are graphic visual representations of information, data or knowledge. These graphics present complex information quickly and clearly, such as in signs, maps, symbols and icon which help us understand more easily.
Today information graphics surround us in the media, in published works, in road signs and manuals. They illustrate information that would be unnecessarily  in text form, and act as a visual shorthand for everyday concepts such as stop and go.
In newspapers, infographics are commonly used to show the weather, as well as maps and site plans for newsworthy events, and graphs for statistical data

Contemporary Design Issue ( Analysis )

WHAT IS ANALYSIS?

The process of breaking a concept down into more simple parts, so that its logical structure is displayed. Analysis does not usually deal with the entire body of a science, but is used only for resolving some issue. Analysis consists primarily in paying attention to what is known in the issue we want to resolve. Analysis is to derive from this examination many truths that can lead us to the knowledge we are seeking. Analysis is the key to find the answer to the issue then we are trying to find out. Analysis is mostly use in education and without analysis there is no education. Such subject that need analysis are mathematic and science. In fact, in our daily life, there are analysis. For example: a football coach need to analyze the enemy’s team to lead his team to victory. Having analysis will lead to a solution.

Analysis without synopsis must be blind. (‘Time and the World Order’, in Herbert Feigl and Grover Maxwell, (eds.), Minnesota Studies in the Philosophy of Science III, Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press, 1962, 527)

Contemporary Design issue ( Introduction )

We were ask to find the meaning of Contemporary Design Issue and understand what it is about.

In Contemporary design issue, there is rhetoric. The concept of rhetoric is any communication used to modify the perspective of others. Rhetoric are divided by two that is author and audience. Author is anyone who gives the information while audience is anyone who receives the information from the author.

Author has two purpose of employing rhetorical communication. These are informative (to inform, describe, define, review, notify, instruct advice, announce, explain, demonstrate) and persuasive (to persuade, convince, influence, argue, recommend, change, advocate, urge, defend, justify).

Meanwhile, audience has two purpose for  receiving communication. There is passive (to receive notice, feel reassured, feel a sense of unity, be entertained, receive instruction, to enjoy, hear advice, be inspired, review, to understand, learn) and active (to examine, quantify, to assess, make informed decisions, interpret, evaluate, judge, resist change, criticize, ridicule, disprove).

Communication Practice ( Visual Communication )

Visual communication is a way of communicating through visual display of information. Primarily associated with 2D image. This includes art, signs, photography, typography, drawing and electronic resources. It is part of what a graphic designer does to communicate visually with the audience. Visual communication is all around us. We do not have to visit an art gallery, read an art/design book to experience visual communication. We use visual communication to navigate and understand the world. Packaging, signage, logos, books, mobile phones, are all examples of visual communication. A watch or clock is a classic example of visual communication that we have used on every day.

One might think the most important trait of a visual communication is creativity. In fact, creativity only constitute a part of what a designer does. Designers do not necessarily have to draw, though they often draw as a way to explore ideas. He/she not only has to be able to ‘think outside the box’ so to speak, but to also work methodically and systematically and to communicate clearly. To design is much more than simply to assemble, to order, or even to edit. It is to add value and meaning, to simplify, to persuade, and to amuse. To design is to transform prose into poetry. Approaches to visual communication.

There are many types of visual communication designers. Some take a more analytical approach, some more conceptual, some expressive. Here are some types of visual communication:

1) Brand identity design
The visual communication designer’s role is to understand the lifestyle and behavior of the target market, its competitors and develop a visual identity system that communicates the values of the brand. Its ultimate goal is to attract sales and increase the profit of the business. A brand experience is more than a logo.

2) Information design
Focuses on how users interact with information, such as way finding systems (signage), transportation schedules, bills, web interfaces, guidebooks, etc. Usability is the top priority here. Clarity and precision are the criteria for good information design. The ultimate aim is to promote understanding and reduce stress and frustration.

3) Advertising and promotion design
Involves in development of visual communication strategies that best attract market target. Similar to branding, market research is important. It is important for advertisements and promotion designs to attract attentions of the target by giving  appeals to the audience’s emotions, causing them to make a purchase or to change their perception.
4) Illustration

Communicate ideas through drawing, using traditional or digital media or mix media. They may work for book or magazine publishers, or they work independently, or self-publish their own books.

5) Animators
Working with moving images, animators also make use of visual communication, often to tell a story and to appeal to the audience’s emotions, through video, motion graphics, animations and sound.

All of the above has a form of expression in each of them. However, there are differences between expression and communication. Expression appeals to our emotions, engaging the audience in a deeper level, but less precise. However, communication is in a form of giving and receiving information/ massage. There has to be in an agreement between the giver and the receiver of a message in order for communication to function. Visual communication is therefore similar to written language works. We use visual language to communicate to an audience. However, visual language might not be as reliable as written language, which has a more formalized. When we talk about visual communication, we speak of a unification of content and the form. We as designers are givers of the message. We deliver the message to the receiver. This is not necessarily for designers to give message. The receivers could provide feedback to the sender. Such situations happen when the receiver is unable to gain the correct meaning of the message.
