Design Studio - Conceptualization

Design Studio - Conceptualization to me is more likely the creation proses. This class help respond to my project. Help me create a more interesting project. From its arrangement, its material, and concept. These 3 words can give impact on the audience so these words need to be focus on to make the project more interesting.

This subject provides some reference to help me come out with idea. Providing reference can help me a lot. By providing references maybe I could combine the ideas to make something new.

20th Century Design (Midpoint Review)

20th Century Design also has been very helpful for me. This subject helps me find purpose. Purpose of the project, purpose of arrangement. The most important is  the purpose of solving the problem. Like what my lecturer says, " a pen is just a pen but the purpose of a pen is huge". From the saying actually I could learn a lot.

Besides that, what I know is every project has it purpose. So I combine what I learned 20th Century Design and Design Studio - Conceptualizing to get the the purpose of my project which i took the concept of Antique.

In my head, before starting a project I always think "What i want to make?" "Why I want to make?" "How I want to make?" "What is the concept?". These are some question that always pops out. So 20th Century Design really helps me in solving this problem.

From this subject, I also learned some new word such as Dadaism and Surrealism. However the topic which help me the most was conceptualism.

Method of Investigation (Midpoint Review)

Method of Investigation has help me a lot with my other subject. This subject is more of a way on how to solve a problem. From this subject, I've learned that there are lot was on solving problem such as primary & secondary research, psychographic, demographic, formative & summative research. Each way of research has its own purpose.

Other than that, I also learned about architecture for this subject which is very interesting and also very helpful for me in other subject. This is because architecture is one of  the ways of making art. From this class also help me understand some word that I don't understand which was "form". What is form? and what the difference between form and uniform?.

Lastly, we were ask to make research about anything that concerned design. This really help for us to practice on solving problem. Solving problem has its own steps on solving. Without this class, maybe L would only be skipping the steps.

Critical Thinking( Midpoint Review)

Critical Thinking help us to think deeply and think harder in order to help us generate ideas. It is more of a practice for us to overcome this problem when we are designers Because designers need to always come out with a new idea and will reach at some point where there will be some difficulties in generating ideas. From the last 7 week, I've learned a lot from this class.

The first week of the class I  need to use my imagination to think what I can  draw with from a Ice Lemon Tea bottle. This task help think deeply on how i can connect the bottle with the drawing.Other than that, I also learn how to make my own typography. To design typography, we need to really understand the structure of the typo because every structure of a typography has its own meaning. Such as colour, typeface, curves.

Besides that, I also learned how to express word. We were ask to express our personalities using words.
We need to use software and create a suitable typeface for the words that we chose. The using of colour also important in this task.

Lastly, from this subject I also learned how to interpret the sound that we heard to the word.I learned that there are other ways to know where we are than just looking at signboard. Besides that, from this task I also learned that everything around us can help us producing ideas.

As conclusion, Critical Thinking is very useful for me to solve problem and it is very useful for my other subject as well.

Method of Investigation (Task 1: Peer Review)

Jeffry (demographic)
  • Demographic is a research about basic information. Age, gender, relegion

Satish (research methodology and quantitative and qualitative)
  • Research methodology is the process used to collect information and data for the purpose of making business decisions. The methodology may include publication research, interview, surveys and other research techniques, and could include both present and historical information.
  • Quantitative is  measure something using  numbers. Usually use for a large scale research.
  • Qualitative is  primarily exploratory research.  It is used to gain an understanding of underlying reasons, opinions, and motivations. It provides insights into the problem or helps to develop ideas or hypotheses for potential quantitative research.

Jojo (literature research & ethnography)

  • Literature research is like a method of research from referencing other person research.
  • Meanwhile the ethnography is like the review on the ethnic culture.

Alexis (formative and summative & observational research)
  • Formative is like a main of the all type of research. For example literature review, trend forecasting, video ethnography, demographic and many more. Formative also cannot be count.
  • Summative is collecting all the data that can be count and the method use like interviews, survey, observation.
  • Observational research is researches for observing the behavior and reaction of subject.
Aisyah (visual anthropology and primary & secondary research)

  • Primary research like  a personal work or personal research by using a manual method like interview or answering the question.
  • Secondary research is a research  by referencing other person research.
  • Visual anthropology is a research about  without any arrangement. Example:  Take a picture of a fruit which suddenly fall a tree.

Critical Thinking (Task 2: Word As Visual Expression)

Word as Visual Expression

We need need to choose five words that describe their self / characteristic. Demonstrate our characteristic trough various means of typographic.

For this task, we need to use suitable typefaces and colour for the word that we choose. The five words that I choose were:

1) Shy
2) Romantic
3) Different
4) Cheerful
5) Casual

These are the 5 word that I have made:

Learning Outcome:

The thing that I learned from this task are the importance of typeface and colour . Typeface and colour and give a huge expression to the audience because colour and shapes can give psychology effect to people. The arrangement of letters also gives impact to the word.

20th Century Design (Task 3: Surrealism)

Surrealism is an art which idea comes from the subconsciousness such as dreams. Normally surrealism is express visually. However, surrealism doesn't has to be in visual such as this video which surrealism of audio:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUDTlvagjJA

This video is very interesting because the concept of making surrealism by audio can effect on the brain and give reaction to the sense.

Critical Thinking (Task 3: Navigate Me)

In this task we are require to do outside assignment, we need to go some place and analyst the sound all the way to the place. The place that I choose is the 7Eleven outside of college. The problem in completing this task is  interpret  sound such as the college. So I put the word that I normally herd in the college.

Learning outcome:
  • Visual is not the only way for us to know where we are. Sound is also helpful for us navigate where we are.
  • Typeface and it size has its own purpose to to give impact to the word.

Digital Design (Task 1: Create a Movie Poster)

We were ask to make a poster for an existing movie using software. It must be portray minimalism. The movie that I chose was Sherlock Holmes : A Game of Shadows.

First project

The first project has the gender which solving mysteries. However, everyone know magnifying glass will show about mysteries. It doesn't show the specific clue or or icon of Sherlock Holmes.

Second Project

For the second project, it has the the gender and icon. The image has a lot of concept but it doesn't have the purpose which was minimalism. The appearance of three person makes the poster crowded and the two image below is not well cut.

Last project

For the last project of this task, I put a pipe to show an iconic of Sherlock Holmes. The the below part of the poster, I put a quote of what Sherlock Holmes always say. Originally the title was dark blue in colour. I change it into brown and apply brown background to make them harmonized with the pipe.

Method of Investigation (Task 3: Investigate Good Source for Good Outcome)

Task:
Read a chapter in two books about architecture. Then summarize and take the sentence or paragraph that give you a lot of information.

Title: Interactive Architecture
Chapter: Sociological and Psychological Implications
AuthorFox, Michael   Kemp, Miles

Princeton Architectural Press
Date Published: 09/2009

Summary:

Sociological and psychological has a huge role in architecture. Everyone need their own privacy and most ideal relaxation and everyone has their own preference/satisfactory trend, such as abstract, realistic, antiques, technology. A number of trends have signaled new insights into how consumer lifestyles may change in the future. These preference are effected by the surrounding of the environment. The surrounding which consist by few factor which is space factor, place factor, sense of smell and sense of sound. These factors effect sociological and psychologically on how people will react towards architecture, because these factors can evoke emotional reaction toward the individual which will effect their behavior. Architecture can adapt and learn from our actions and adjust itself accordingly, it also has the capacity to teach us how to live. The role of sociological and psychological are one of the reason which made architecture exist.

Architectural space can take advantage of an audience locally, regionally, and globally by reconceptualizing the role that the physical environment plays in shaping the viewer’s experience. Such an approach suggests that the physical environment can be interactively viewed both within the confines of the space and beyond its walls. New lifestyle trends present many architectural situations for unique and wholly unexplored applications that address today’s dynamic, flexible, and constantly changing activities. An interactive architectural environment can not only facilitate lifestyles and behaviors, but also influence them. It is important to remember that our psychological and sociological interpretations of space are influenced by many factors beyond the spatial confines or interpreted definition of space and include lighting, acoustics, and smell. Many applications in interactive architecture are not limited to sensing and mechanical movement, and can embrace a wealth of new tectonic innovations that can facilitate interactions through flexible or foldable LCD screens, smart fabrics, thin-air projection technologies, and holographic projections. These innovations will all be integral to architectural programming in the future and will demand new ways of thinking about and designing the experience of space. While many of these technologies are not physical, they do play an important role in influencing the definition and use of space and the experience of space. In many instances, a building that adapts to our desires can shape our experience. By the very definition of dynamically responding to user desires, IA can create an enhanced spatial experience. As a building responds to our actions, we are confronted with a new level of awareness and choices. An environment can create a dialogue with inhabitants based on either satisfying an interpretation of goal states or creating a new emergent state (a number of simple entities forming more complex behaviors) based on ambiguous assumptions of desires. Key to such a dialogue, however, is that the user is engaged: asked, enticed, manipulated, directed, or coerced. To do this, the environment must operate on a simple, even intuitive, level of communication.

Title: Architecture of Community
Chapter: Chapter 2: Nature of the Architectural Object
Author: Krier, Leon Hetzel, Peter J. Thadani, Diru
Publisher: Island Press
Date Published: 05/2009

Summary:

Traditionally, architecture object has a purpose to it. For example, building, house, church, mosque. Each of them has its own purpose. However modernity of architecture object has no purpose to it. For example, a skyscraper. People amaze by it high but in reality a skyscraper is just a building which is traditionally pronouns as. Traditional object has a nickname suitable for its function. Modernity gives more of shame to traditional object by using unrelated nickname for the object. Traditional architecture mostly focused on the “form”. However modern architecture mostly focus on the “uniform” of the object which is the material and the appearance. From using bricks to glass as a wall should we be proud of modernity. The unique appearance of the object which is different from the traditional object. Modernity is not a bad thing. Modernity more likely means improvement. However, shouldn’t we forget the concept of traditional which is “original”.

Whether it is a place of worship, a telephone box, or a garden wall, a building expresses the fundamental values of its builders and designers. It is a symbol of our state of mind and our self-respect. Symbols are at once expressive and instrumental. They are not merely means of expression or mirrors; they are tools, means of safeguarding civic and personal values, of encouraging and supporting them. If a man is dressed in rags his confidence suffers, as does the confidence others have in him. He is in crisis with himself and with the world. Famously, we make buildings and then they make us. It is impossible to conceive of buildings in isolation, cut off from the world. Whatever their size, buildings influence the world. They must be conceived as parts of a whole. Buildings are never neutral; they always have either a positive or negative influence. They are active.
